Mani ben Patel Bio

Maniben Patel was an Indian Independence movement activist and also a Member of the Indian Parliament. She was the daughter of well-known freedom fighters and Indian leader Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. She was born on 3 April 1903. She adopted the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi in 1918 and started working at his Ashram regularly in Ahmedabad.

Early life and Education

She was born at Karamsad, Bombay Presidency, British India. She lost her mother at the age of 6. She was raised by her uncle Vitthalbhai Patel. She completed her early education at Queen Mary High School in Bombay. In 1920, she moved to Ahmedabad and attended the University of Rashtriya Vidyapith which was started by Mahatma Gandhi. After graduating in 1925, she started assisting her father.

Political career

She was once a Vice President of the Gujarat Provincial Congress Committee. Later from 1952 to 1957, she was elected as a member of the Indian National Congress which was led by Nehru in the first Lok Sabha from South Kaira constituency. From 1957 to 1962, she was in the second Lok Sabha from Anand. From 1953 to 1956, she was the Secretary and from 1957 to 1964, she was the Vice President of Gujarat State Congress. In 1964, she was elected to Rajya Sabha and served there till 1970. There is a lack of information about exactly which year she left the Congress Party.

Maniben Patel did not contest in the 1971 Lok Sabha polls. Then in 1973, she was elected to Lok Sabha when she won by-poll from Sabarkantha by defeating Shantubhai Patel of Congress by a narrow margin. In 1977, she was elected to Lok Sabha from Mehsana on the Janata Party ticket. Before her death in 1990, she was connected with several educational institutions and organizations including the Gujarat Vidyapith, Vallabh Vidyanagar, Bardoli Swaraj Ashram, and Navjivan trust.

Movements

She had participated in many movements including Borsad Movement, Bardoli Satyagraha, Rajkot Satyagraha, and Non-cooperation movement as well as Salt Satyagraha. She also encouraged and motivated other women to join them. She also went on a hunger strike against the order and authorities which allowed her to reunite with Kasturba Gandhi.

Principles and Works

She always ensured that she and her father’s cloth weaved from Khadi threads which she spun by herself and she always insisted on traveling in third class.

There is also a book named Inside Story of Sardar Patel: The Diary of Mani ben Patel from 1936 to 1950 by Mani ba hen Patel.

In 2011, the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Memorial Trust undertook a project to publish the Gujarati diary of Maniben Patel in collaboration with Navjeevan Publications.
