Glenda Jackson’s Bio

Glenda May Jackson is a famous politician in the United Kingdom. You might know her as beside her political career, she was an English actress also. She has been awarded the Academy Award for Best Actress twice. She was born on 9 May 1936 in Birkenhead, Cheshire, United Kingdom. She took a hard decision to change her career from acting to politics and started her political career in 1992 by being elected as the Member of Parliament of the Lab our party.

Early life and Education

Jackson’s father was a builder while her mother worked in shops and as a cleaner. She completed her early education at West Kirby County Grammar School for Girls which was near West Kirby. During her teens, she performed at the Townswomen’s Guild drama group. She worked for two years in Boots and after that, she got a scholarship in 1954 to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).

Acting Career

She began her career as an actress. Her professional stage debut was in 1957 in Terence Rattigan’s Separate Tables. She became a successful actress. Her first film was This Sporting Life in 1963. She was recognized with the film Woman in Love in 1969 and for that, she received an Academy Award. Some of her well-known films include A Touch of Class, The Incredible Sara, Stevie, The Rainbow, King of the Wind, Mothering Sunday, and a lot more.

She also worked in television in various popular shows and recently she also worked on radio. She was a theater artist as well.

Political career

She retired from acting to stand for election to the House of Commons in the 1992 general election. She became the Labour MP for Hampstead and Highgate. In 1996 she joined the Labour front bench as Shadow transport minister. Then in the 1997 election, she served as a junior minister in the government of Prime Minister Tony Blair. So from 1997 to 1999, she served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport. In 1999 she resigned from that post.

She served as a Member of Parliament for Hampstead and Kilburn from 1992 till 2010.

Personal life

In 1958 she married Roy Hodges and the couple had a son. They got divorced in 1976. Her son, Dan Hodges who was born in 1969, is now a newspaper columnist and also a former Labour party advisor and commentator.

Honors

In 1978, she was honored with Commander of the Order of the British Empire (Civil Division) of the United Kingdom and got the title of CBE. She is also honored with several Honorary degrees by different universities.
