Theresa May bio

Therese May Brasier, also known as Lady May, is a British politician who is in the position of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. From 2016 to 2019, she also served as The Leader of the Conservative Party. Earlier from 2010 to 2016, she served as the Home Secretary. Since 1997, she has been the Member of Parliament for Maidenhead in Berkshire. She considers herself a One-nation conservative.

Early life and Education

Lady May was born on 1 October 1956 in Eastbourne, Sussex, England. She is the only child of her parents. Her father Hubert Brasier was a Church of England clergyman. Her mother Zaidee Brasier was a Conservative Party supporter.

She completed her schooling at Heythrop Primary School in Heythrop and later from a Roman Catholic independent School named Juliana’s Convent School for Girls in Begbroke.

At the age of 13, she won a scholarship at the former Holton Park Girls’ Grammar School which was later recognized as Wheatley Park Comprehensive School in Wheatley. In 1977, she studied at the University of Oxford and read geography at St Hugh’s College. She also worked part-time at a bakery on Saturdays to earn pocket money.

Political career

She served as the councilor for Durnsford in Merton. After two unsuccessful attempts, in 1997 she was elected to the House of Commons. From 1999 to 2010, she served in many roles in the shadow cabinet. From 2002 to 2003 she was the Chairwoman of the Conservative party. After the 2010 election, she was appointed as Home Secretary and Minister for Women and Equalities but she resigned from that in 2012. In the 2015 general election, she was appointed and became the longest-serving Home Secretary in over 60 years.

In July 2016, she was elected as Conservative party leader and became the second female Prime Minister of the UK. She is the first and only woman who has held two of the great offices of state.

Personal life

She got married to Sir Philip May who works as an investment relationship manager presently employed by Capital International. They don’t have any children. They spend their holidays together hiking. She likes cricket as she is a fan of Sir Geoffrey Boycott. She enjoys cooking and is a very good cook.

Honors

She was appointed as a Member of Her Majesty’s Most Honorable Privy Council in 2003 and got the title of PC. She got the honorary degree of a doctorate from World Sikh University in 2014 by India. In 2006, she was nominated as one of society’s inspiring women and she is also described as Britain’s second most powerful woman after Queen Elizabeth II. In 2017, Forbes listed her as the second most powerful woman in the world behind Angela Merkel.
