Ann Widdecombe Bio

Ann Noreen Widdecombe is a British politician, author, and television personality. She was a member of the Conservative Party. She served as the Member of Parliament for Maidstone and The Weald and the former Maidstone constituency from 1987 to 2010. From 2019 to 2020, she served as a Member of the European Parliament for South West England. She joined the Brexit party which was later named Reform UK in 2019.

She was born on 4 October 1947 in Bath, Somerset, England. Currently, she is 74 years old as of 2021.

Early life and Education

She is the daughter of Rita Noreen and James Murray Widdecombe who is a Ministry of Defense Civil Servant. She completed her early education at Royal Naval school in Singapore and La Sainte Union Convent school in Bath. After that, she went to the University of Birmingham where she studied Latin. Later, she attended Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford where she studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics.

Before entering Parliament, she worked at Unilever from 1973 to 1975 and then from 1975 to 1980, as an administrator at the University of London.

Political career

She was first elected to the House of Commons for the Conservative party in the 1987 general election. And then she served as a member of Maidstone constituency. She served in that position until 1997.

From 1994 to 1995, she served as the Minister of State for Employment, and from 1995 to 1997 she served as Minister of State for Prisons. Later from 1998 to 1999, she served in the Shadow Cabinet of William Hague as the Shadow Secretary of State for Health. Then from 1999 to 2001, she served as Shadow Home Secretary.

In 1997, she was also appointed to the Privy Council. At the 2010 general election, she stood down from the House of Commons.

In 2016 she supported the vote leave campaign to withdraw the United Kingdom from the European Union. At the 2019 European Parliament election, she return to politics as the lead candidate for the Brexit party in South West England and served that seat until 31 January 2020.

Television Career

Since 2002 she has made many television and radio appearances as well as a television presenter. After her retirement, she also made her stage Dept on 9 December 2011 at the Orchard Theatre. As a stage artist, she has participated in many plays as well.

Personal life

She has never married and also does not have any children. She lived with her mother until her death. She is fond of cats and other animals such as foxes. Moreover, non-political accomplishment also includes being a popular novelist and she is currently writing a weekly column for the Daily Express.

Honors

She was appointed as an Honorary Fellow of Canterbury Christ Church University on 30 January 2009. On 5 July 2012, she was awarded the Honorary degree of Doctor of the University by the University of Birmingham. And she has also made Dame of the Order of St Gregory the Great (DSG) in 2013.
