Ann Taylor Bio

Winifred Ann Taylor is also popular as Baroness Taylor of Bolton. She is a British politician and life peer. She is a member of the Lab our party. She has served as Minister for International Defence and Security from 2008 to 2010. She was a member of Parliament for Bolton West from 1974 to 1983 and from 1987 to 2005 for Dewsbury.

Early life and Education

Taylor was born on 2 July 1947 in London, United Kingdom. Currently, she is 74 years old as of 2021. She completed her early education at Bolton school. After that, she went to the University of Bradford and from there she graduated with a BSc degree in Politics and History in 1969.

Political career

In February 1974, she contested Bolton West but failed to win by 603 votes. At the October 1974 general election, she was elected as a Member of Parliament. From 1977 to 1979, she worked as an assistant government whip in the government of James Callaghan. In 1983, she contested for the new seat of Bolton North-East but got defeated by the Conservative party member Peter Thurnham. After that, she represented Dewsbury from 1987 until 2005.

In 1987, when she returned to the House of Commons, she became Shadow Minister under the Labour party leader Neil Kinnock; covering the education and science department from 1979 to 1981 and the environment department from 1981 to 1992. After that from 1992 to 1994, she served in the Shadow Cabinet of John Smith and Tony Blair and became Shadow Secretary of State for Education. Then from 1994 to 1995, she served as Shadow Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, and from 1994 to 1997 she was also the Shadow Leader of the House of Commons. She became the first woman to serve as Leader of the House of Commons and Lord President of the Privy Council in 1997. After that in 1998, she became the first woman to serve as Government Chief Whip (Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury).

From 2001 to 2005, she served as chair of the Intelligence and Security Committee. At the 2005 general election, she stepped down from the House of Commons.

On 13 May 2005, it was announced that Taylor was to be given a life peerage. Then on 13 June 2005, she was made Baroness Taylor of Bolton, of Bolton in the County of Greater Manchester.
