Early life
Alice Cullen was born on 18 March 1891. She completed her schooling at Lochwinnoch Elementary School. Cullen married three times and got widowed twice. She was a housewife. From 1935 to 1945, she was a member of Glasgow Corporation. And later in 1941, she served at the position of Justice of the Peace. She died on 31 May 1969 at the age of 78 years.
Political Career
At the by-election in 1948, she was elected to the House of Commons as the Member of Parliament for Glasgow Gorbals constituency which was safe for Labour. At that election, she competed with three men to secure the position which was vacated due to the resignation of George Buchanan who was the previous MP and who assumed the position of Chairman of the National Assistance Board.
She held that seat at other general elections as well until her death in 1969 at the age of 78. She was MP for Glasgow Gorbals during the time of The Global vampires incident in September 1954. At that incident, hundreds of school children went searching the Southern Necropolis cemetery armed with stakes to find a vampire who has iron teeth. For that incident, she led the City Council in blaming horror comics and films. And as a result, they were asked to ban the American horror comics to minors which she supported along with all other Glasgow MPs.
In October 2016, a play which was based on this incident The Gorbals Vampire was performed at the Citizens Theater in Glasgow. Her portrait is also placed at the National Portrait Gallery, London.
