Jacqueline Jill Smith is a British broadcaster, political commentator, and also a former politician of the Labour Party of the United Kingdom. She has served as a Member of Parliament for Redditch from 1997 to 2010. She was the Home Secretary from 2007 to 2009 and also the first woman to hold that position.
Early life and Education
Smith was born on 3 November 1962 in Malvern, Worcestershire, England. Currently, she is 59 years old as of 2021. Her parents were teachers and both Labour councilors and her mother had briefly joined the Social Democratic Party. She completed her early education at Dyson Perrins High School.
She studied philosophy, politics, and economics at Hertford College, Oxford.
After graduation, she moved to London and started working as a researcher for labor MP. But later she moved out of London and gained a Postgraduate Certificate in Education and became a teacher.
Political career
At the 1997 general election, she was elected for the Redditch constituency. In 1999, she joined the government and served various ministerial positions under Prime Minister Tony Blair. From 2003 to 2005, she served as Deputy Minister for women, and also she was the Minister of State for Industry and the Regions. From 2005 to 2006, she was Minister of State for Schools and Learners. She was promoted to chief whip in the 2006 cabinet reshuffle. So she served as Chief Whip of the House of Commons Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury.
When Gordon Brown was appointed as Prime Minister, she became the first female Home Secretary so she served as Home Secretary from 2007 to 2009. But in 2009, she resigned as Home Secretary as involved in the United Kingdom parliamentary expenses scandal. She is one of the politicians who have the highest-profile figures involved in the scandal. Then she lost her seat as an MP for Redditch at the 2010 general election. As she left the House of Commons, she remained in public life as a political pundit but later she took up roles in various other sectors like health and media.
