Dikshit, 78, is the daughter-in-law of Uma Shankar Dikshit, a tall Brahmin statesman who served as a Union minister and governor for a long time. After leading a crusade against reported violence against women in the state, she and her 82 colleagues were imprisoned for 23 days by the Uttar Pradesh government in 1990. From 1986 until 1989, Dikshit served as a Union Minister, first as Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and then as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office. After a protracted illness, she passed away on July 20, 2019.
